AbstractWhere shipping legislation is concerned there have been a number of recent development in China. The first ever arbitration legislation there came into effect on September 1, 1995, though I can find nothing within it which, even remotely, has anything to do with the Chinese Maritime Code which came into force on July 1, 1993. In the Maritime Codewhich came into force in July, 1993, the section that deals with cargo liability -- which resembles the enactment of the Hague-Visby Rules in other jurisdisctions -- is in Chapter IV entitled 'Contract of Carriage of Goods by Sea'. Here, China has adopted a hybrid of Hague-Visby Rules and the Hamburg Rules.
