Article TitleChina shipyards strive to realise their potential : challenge to Japan and Korea will come with marketplace experience ...

AbstractChina's commercial shipyards have not made the impact on the worldwide market they predicted several years ago. Reasons behind this are varied, but those being put forward by the local yard management suggest that a downturn in global contracts has had its effects on the number of newbuilding deals confirmed with the PRC shipbuilders. Moreover, yards in South Korea and Japan have become increasingly concerned over the possible high market share in certain sectors China's shipyards are capable of securing, and have consequently kept prices as low as possible to offset the competition threat. Few South Korean or Japanese shipbuilders are prepared to comment on the latter.
