Abstract | Lhasa is the Jerusalem of the Tibetans. Its name roughly means "the land of gods" or "Holy Place." The city dates back about 1,300 years, scholars say, when King Songzan Campo unified all Tibetan tribes and moved his headquarters there from Shannan. Shannan, or Lhoka as Tibetans call it, lies to Lhasa's south. Its most important town is Zetang in Nedong. |
