Abstract | Like so many sacrificial heroes in world history, the leaders of the Democratic Party have taken a courageous stand against autocracy -- and won a record electoral turnout of one-third so that, with its allies, it gained almost half the seats in the Legco. In the teeth of the Beijing tiger Martin Lee, Christine Loh, Margaret Ng and a few other upholders of principle have secured a convincing (by previous Hong Kong standards) victory for their programme of insisting upon strict autonomy for an increasingly democratic Hong Kong after 1997. |
