AbstractA study was conducted to estimate lives lost and health care cost caused by smoking in Hong Kong using smoking attributable fractions. Smoking was found to be responsible for 19% of all deaths, 30% of male deaths and 5% of female deaths. It claimed 1921 lives each year from lung cancer, 1274 from chronic obstructive airway disease, 493 from stroke and 417 from ischemic heart disease. Smoking resulted in about 5% of hospital in-patients and around 4% of out-patient consultation. The direct health cost incurred was estimated roughly at 670 to 970 million Hong Kong dollars annually.
