AbstractBlood glucose concentration decreases rapidly in unpreserved samples mainly due to the glycolytic process of the cellular component. The ideal practice is to measure blood glucose without delay, or separate the plasma from the cells immediately and measure plasma glucose subsequently. However, the delay cannot be avoided in routine clinical practice. With their present knowledge of the subject, the authors propose a practical guideline for preserving blood glucose by sodium fluoride, haemolysis and D-mannose.
