Abstract | We can see a regional picture of steadily improving standards of living. But there are some disturbing cracks in the otherwise rosy picture of ever-growing affluence. On the economic front, it was worrying to read reports this week that about 10,000 restaurant workers had been laid off in the past seven months and that thousands more are expected to lose their jobs. That was all depressing enough. What was even more disturbing, however, was the story this week of the 38-year-old single mother who left her two toddlers unattended overnight. Nonetheless, the incident betrayed a startling ignorance about child-rearing that seems to be widely shared in our community. |
