Abstract | Now that Hong Kong is the world's eighth-largest economy, international media coverage has increasingly portrayed the territory as a thriving land of skyscrapers, sophistication and massive infrastructural projects. Such images of modernity can be found in many cities: Hong Kong's special attractions as a travel destination are its traditional Chinese lifestyles. This land of glittering record-breaking modernity is also a world of ancient beliefs and intriguing local customs. They can be seen and sensed throughout Hong Kong, in downtown districts as well as rural communities. They form a mosaic of Chinese culture and traditions, which portrays the real Hong Kong. |
