AbstractPremier Li Peng's work report to this year's National People's Congress was notably short and to the point. More than three-quarters of the address was devoted - inevitably - to the economy. In comments that were remarkably frank about the government's past mistakes, Li stressed that while growth remains essential to fulfilling the national agenda, one of this year's key priorities is to curb inflation. He also signalled that the corruption crackdown would continue. This article reports this and other key elements in this year's NPC, which also saw Li emphasize boosting agriculture and outline a strategy for dealing with the enormous problem of China's unprofitable state-owned enterprises.
