AbstractThis article reviews the different methods that are available in practice today for determining the sex of offspring and examines the efficacy of these mehods based on scientific data from the literature. The largely unfounded claims of many popular methods are critically examined, and recent advances such as flow cytometry techniques and embryo biopsy methods are outlined. The legal, ethical and moral implications of such sex selection practices in modern society are also reviewed, and the position of the medical profession as regards such sex selection practices is discussed.
