AbstractIf what medical experts say about cervical cancer is true - that a simple smear test could warn of the disease - then a number of deaths in Hongkong each year could be averted. Currently, health department statistics show that more than 130 women succumb yearly to cervical cancer. But cervical cancer deaths are on the increase; there were 144 reported deaths last year alone. Since 1989, this kind of fatality has seen a 17 per cent increase. Figures indicate that about 500 women - some as young as 25-35 years of age - will develop the disease. Worldwide, half a million women develop cervical cancer each year.
