| Abstract | Hongkong is facing a dramatic slowdown in economic growth, ushering in lower inflation and extinguishing negative interest rates, which would remove a major prop supporting the property market - if forecasts by two economists this week prove correct. The gloomiest prediction comes from David Shairp, senior analyst at Barclays de Zoete Wedd. He says a strike by local spenders may create a consumer recession by the fourth quarter of this year and that 1995 real GDP is expected to slump to 2.3 per cent. This would be the worst performance for a decade and compares with present consensus forecasts of 5.6 per cent growth. |
