Abstract | Super-hype or super confusion? Hongkong has thousands of devoted users of the information superhighway, or at least of its basic building block, the Internet. This week, confusion reached megabyte proportions when Hong Kong Internet and Gateway Services, one of the territory's major providers of Internet services, cut off hundreds of customers - apparently pending clarification of its own rights to resell access to the US-based net. There in cyberspace strangers meet and sometimes mate, arcane research can be exchanged and seekers after odd and unusual truths can post an E-mail request in the knowledge that other members of the burgeoning electronic community will respond . And as Keith Addison reports, an increasing number of the territory's modems are homing in on the net to reach out to members of Overseas Chinese communities around the globe. |
