AbstractTake two billion people. Add economic reforms and rising affluence. What do you get? A scramble by purveyors of consumer credit and plastic money. Although Diners Club came to India in 1958 and China got its first MasterCard about 30 years later, the credit card has amounted to little more than a status symbol in both countries. But as the two economies expand, plastic no longer seems a luxury.
