| Abstract | The importance the mainland attached to the latest round was also reflected in a meeting between Chiao and Wang Zhaoguo, who is the director of the Communist Party's United Front Department, spoke well of the Strait relationship and disclosed that the mainland would be putting forward new proposals and suggestions in accordance with the latest development. Wang also mentioned the mainland's principle of "peaceful unification; and one country, two systems". While Chiao fully endorsed the concept of "peaceful unification,"he said various circles in Taiwan still have reservations about the other proposal of "one-country, two systems" and that there do exist practical problems. He believed that the emphasis at the current stage of relationship should be laid on more exchanges and understanding, and on the further reduction of hostile concepts. |
