Abstract | English is, without question, the most widely-used language in international trade. Since Hong Kong has become an international trade centre, managers and professionals must be proficient in English in order to maintain a competitive advantage. However, more than 98 percent of the Hong Kong population are Chinese. While Chinese is commonly used at social gatherings, most Chinese managers and professionals speak English only at work. The use of English among students is even more limited. In general, students are more inclined to speak Chinese (Cantonese) than English. Hence, the selection of a proper medium for teaching can be problematical, and it is especially acute in the teaching of accounting. |
