| Abstract | Oliver Twist's beadle, the odious Mr Bumble, was moved to remark that the law was "an ass - an idiot." Some decisions over the past decade - in Hongkong and outside - tend to reinforce the sceptical view held by that former solicitor's clerk and court reporter Charles Dickens.
