AbstractChina accused the British government of allowing Hong Kong to be used as a base by "anti-China" elements in support of the students' "rebellion" in the Chinese capital. The mid-year military crackdown on the students' democracy movement was disapproved of by the US and most other Western governments and by massive demonstrations in Hong Kong. Beijing would not tolerate such political activities in Hong Kong; relations between governments of the UK and Beijing soured, and China began taking a tough line proposals to introduce democratic reforms in the Basic Law.
